THE MUSIC OF COLOURS

Exhibition: Dessa draws her inspiration from music. The musical notes induce her works in abstract lyric form. Presented in Pully until April 30

For Dessa (Deborah Petroz-Abeles), presently at the Museum of Pully near Lausanne, music and painting are inseparable as both have a common source of inspiration. "Music paints and paintings sing", she says. An unusual path for this woman, born in 1948 in Zimbabwe to a Hungarian father and Polish mother, and profoundly marked by the death of her Jewish maternal grandparents, deported to Auschwitz.

But how is it that two independent but complementary arts, music and painting, can exist in such perfect symbiosis in her artistic expression? To this, Dessa replies that music touches the depths of her soul and brings bursts of emotions that she translates into colour and form. Her art is not cerebral but entirely spontaneous, "explosive" one would say. This does not stop her however, from judging her work aesthetically, adding light strokes here and there which reveal the personal intimacy of her compositions.

Through the music the artist takes leave of her earthly body to reach her ethereal self. She sometimes dances as she paints - certain musical passages remind her of her childhood dancing lessons - and the strokes of her brush quicken as the rhythm accelerates.

If Mahler has been the first master for her inspiration, carrying her to the depths of an infinite research, the elevation of Messiaen's music draws her towards nature: water effects are visible in her paintings.

Viktor Ullmann, the Austrian composer deported to Theresienstadt and murdered in Auschwitz, has a particular place in the creative inspiration of Dessa, probably in memory of her grandparents who died under the same circumstances. The music of this composer allows her to make spiritual and affective contact with those members of her family of which no material souvenir remains. It is perhaps to seek a new relation with Germany, other than that inherited from the past, that she exhibits her work regularly in Berlin.

Her artistic career has been marked out by numerous exhibitions. Each of these presents a series of paintings inspired by one piece of music to which she listens repeatedly, hundreds of times, during the months of preparation.

As homage to the work of Dessa, the artist has been awarded the Grand Prix of international artists in 1989, and the Golden Lion of Venice in 1995.

Die Musik der Farben

Dessa schöpft ihre Inspiration aus der Musik. Ihre Werke lassen sich von den Noten in die lyrische Abstraktion tragen. Zu sehen in Pully bis zum 30.April 2000
Für Dessa, Deborah Petroz, die im Moment eine Ausste!lung im Museum von Pully nahe Lausanne, hat, stützen sich Musik und Malerei auf die gleichen Muster, denn beide schöpfen ihre Inspiration aus der gleichen Quelle. ''Die Musik malt und die Malerei singt'' sagt sie. Eine Reise außerhalb des Alltäglichen für diese Frau, die 1948 Zimbabwe geboren wurde und Tochter eines ungarischen Vaters und einer polnischen Mutter ist. Mit einer Erinnerung die sie nie gezeichnet hat: der Tod ihrer Großeltern mütterlicherseits Juden, die nach Auschwitz deportiert wurden.

Aber warum sind Musik und Malerei, zwei selbständige Künste, selbst wenn sie sich als komplementär erweisen können, bei ihr eine so perfekte Symbiose in ihrer künstlerischen Sprache eingegangen? Dessas Antwort darauf lautet, dass die Musik die Tiefe der Seele berührt und in ihr Gefühle hervorsprudeln lässt, die sie in Farben und Formen übersetzt. Ihre Arbeit ist nicht vom Verstand geprägt sondern von Spontanität ."ausgespuckt", wie man heute sagt. Was sie allerdings nicht daran hindert, ästhetische Maßstäbe an ihr Werk anzulegen und hier und du mit kleinen Strichen zu verbessern, die die persönliche Intimität ihrer Kompositionen enthüllen.

Die Musik lädt die Künstlerin aus Pully ein, ihren irdischen Körper zu verlassen und statt dessen in ihren ätherischen Körper zu schlüpfen. Manchmal tanzt sie sogar während des Malens - gewisse Musikpassagen erinnern sie an Tanzstunden ihrer Kindheit - und ihr Pinsel beschleunigt sich mit den, Rhythmus der Musik.

Wenn Mahler, der erste Meister ihrer Inspiration. sie in die liefen einer unendlichen Suche geführt, hat, so führt sie Messian mit der Weite seiner Musik in die Natur: Wassereffekte werden in ihren Bilder" sichtbar.

Viktor Ullmann, österreichischer Komponist, nach Theresienstadt deportiert und in Auschwitz ermordet, hält eine Sonderstellung in der Vorstellung der Künstlerin Dessa, wahrscheinlich die der Erinnerung an ihre Großeltern, die unter den gleichen Umständen gestorben sind. Die Musik dieses Komponisten erlaubt ihr, geistig und emotional mit diesen Mitgliedern ihrer Familie ‚von denen sie keine konkreten, Erinnerungsstücke übrig behalten hat, in Kontakt zu treten. Vielleicht stellt sie auch deshalb regelmäßig in Berlin aus, um eine neue Beziehung zu Deutschland aufzubauen, das Erbe der Vergangenheit berücksichtigend.

Zahlreiche Ausstellungen haben ihr Lehen als Künstlerin begleitet. Jede einzelne von ihnen präsentiert eine Serie von Bildern, die von einem musikalischer Werk inspiriert sind und während der Monate der Vorbereitung vielfach angehört wurden. So hat Dessa auch Auszeichnungen zur Anerkennung ihres künstlerischen Werkes bekommen, so der "Internationale Preis der jungen Künstler" 1988 und den "Goldenen Löwen von Venedig" 1995.

Pour Dessa (Deborah Petroz) en ce moment au musée Pully près de Lausanne musique et peinuture se déclinent sur une même registre, car toutes deux ont une inspiration de même source. "La musique peint et la peinture chante" dit-elle. Un Parcoursa hors du commun pour cette femme née en 1948 au Zimbabwe d‘un père hongrois et d‘une mère polonaise. Avec un souvenir qui l‘a profondément marquée, la mort de ses grands-parents maternels, juifs déportés a Auschwitz. Mais, pourquoi musique et peinture, deux arts autonomes même s‘ils peuvent se révéler complémentaires, sont- ils présents en si parfaite symbiose dans son expression artistique?

A cela, Dessa répond que la musique touche la profondeur de l‘âme et fait jaillir en elle des émotions traduites par la couleur et les formes. Sa peinture n‘est pas cérébrale, mais entièrement spontanée, "crashée" dirait-on aujourd‘hui. Ce qui ne l‘empêche cependant pas de porter un jugement esthétique sur son oeuvre et de corriger ici ou là, par petites touches qui révèlent l‘intimité personelle de chacune de ses compositions. La musique invite l‘artiste pulliéranne à sortir de son corps terrestre pour aller dans son corps éthéré. Elle danse même parfois en peignant - certains passages musicaux lui rappelent les leçons de danse de son enface -, et son pinceau va plus vite lorsque le rythme s‘accélère.

Si Mahler a été le premier maître de son inspiration en la conduisant vers les profondeurs d‘une recherche infinie, Messian, avec l‘ampleur de sa musique, la dirige vers la nature: des effets d‘eau par exemple, visibles dans ses toiles.

Viktor Ullmann, compositeur juif autrichien, déporté a Theresienstadt et mort au camp d‘Auschwitz, tient une place à part dans l‘inspiration créatrice de Dessa, probablement en mémoire de ses grand-parents morts das les même circonstances. La musique de ce compositeur lui perment d‘entrer spirituellement et affectivement en contact avec ces membres de sa famille dont aucun souvenir matériel n‘a réchappé. C‘est peut-être aussi pour rechercher une nouvell relation avec l‘Allemagne par rapport à celle héritée du passé qu‘elle expose régulièrement a Berlin. De nombreuses expositions ont jalonné sa vie d‘artiste. Chacune d‘elles présente une suite de peintures inspirées d‘une composition musicale écoutée maintes fois pendant les mois de préparation.

Des distinctions aussi sont venues rendre hommage au travail de Dessa, dont le grand Prix international des jeunes artistes en 1989 et le Lion d‘or de Venise en 1995
